Tattoo through thorns to the stars. Phrases in Latin

The Russian language is rich in various phraseological units. There are a huge number of expressions that are used, intuitively understanding what they mean, but very rarely think about the actual origin, let alone an adequate literary application. A striking example is the catchphrase: "Through thorns to the stars." What does this mean and why exactly did these words come into circulation? These questions are quite interesting both from the point of view of colloquial use and in relation to literary use.

Origin

The roots of this expression usually refer to the famous Latin Per aspera ad astra, which, in turn, is attributed to Lucius Seneca, who used it in his work Hercules Furious. The Roman philosopher, who lived at the beginning of the first century AD, was one of the brightest representatives of Stoicism.

This line of thought obliges followers to maintain a firm position, despite any blows of fate. Apparently, this inclines scientists to point to the source of the words of Seneca, who, as you know, was not only a strict follower of the teachings of Stoicism, but also went to his death so as not to change his convictions, taking his wife at the same time. Indeed, it is not often in our times that one comes across such conviction in one's philosophical position.

Through thorns to the stars: what does it mean?

Returning to the quoted phrase: Per aspera ad astra, one can see the meaning originally invested in it. In translation, it sounds something like this: "to the stars, overcoming difficulties on the way." Indeed, there is a clear stoic position. Another variant found in the translations of Hercules is "the path from the earth to the stars is not smooth." However, these are already nuances of interpretation within the framework of the language into which the literary work is translated. Be that as it may, this is where the main meaning of the phraseological phrase “Through thorns to the stars” follows. What this means for Seneca himself can be guessed simply from the Stoic way of thinking and the corresponding attitude to the life of the author.

Moving upwards, towards the goal of one's existence, its achievement with the involvement of all the forces released to man by nature, despite obstacles, large or small. After all, this is the meaning of life for a true Stoic. We should also mention the appearance in the Russian version of the turnover of the interesting word "thorns". It means a thorn, a plant with thorns, and also in figuratively difficulty, adversity, etc. It is not so easy to walk along a road overgrown with such plants. Apparently, this word was added to enhance the effect. It is this variant that has been fixed in the Russian language.

Consider the following nuance associated with the popular expression "Through hardships to the stars." What does it mean if we imagine that the stars are not a goal, but something practically unattainable, a fantasy? What, in general, are the stars for a person on present stage technology development. In this case, another interpretation appears, which is rarely mentioned in phraseological dictionaries. Namely: a worthy, but seemingly unattainable goal gives rise to even more difficult obstacles.

However, the moments of interpretation are not all the material that can be considered within the framework of the title of the article. Indeed, so far the emphasis has been only on the meaning of the phrase “Through thorns to the stars” (what does it mean).

Pronunciation

In colloquial speech, and not only, a variety of this phraseological unit is often found. Instead of "through" is used "through". In general, the variation is quite legitimate, although it is sometimes considered incorrect, since it is the first one that is offered in dictionaries. Do not deceive the reader by answering unambiguously what is right and how is not. After all, this is just a stable expression, and changes in the language are often so fleeting that even phraseological units turn out to be rather unsteady.

But let us return to our statement "Through thorns to the stars." What does it mean? The property of combining words, from the point of view of pronunciation, is very unstable. As a rule, in a conversation, people rarely use this saying in the form in which we presented it. Our phrase sounds better with the word "through", paradoxical as it may seem.

Conclusion

This material does not pretend to be a full-fledged analysis of all the nuances when answering the question: “Through hardships to the stars: what does this mean?”. The type of information offered does not have an edifying purpose, but only gives a generally accepted interpretation.

At the consultation, a 27-year-old girl. On the outer side of the thumb of her left hand is the inscription in Latin "Through thorns to the stars."

From her story: “I can’t say that since childhood I was attracted to science, which for some reason I associated with microbiology. Moreover, I did not think that I would be engaged in science with such interest and zeal. However, after graduating from a technical university, I really wanted to expand and deepen my education. I continued my studies in graduate school and engaged in scientific research in the field of laser surface modification. It is not customary in the scientific world to get tattoos on the arms, but I wanted to “state” my approach to research: “Per aspera ad astra”, which means for me - hard work and intuition will help to “cut through” the road to discoveries, even if it sounds so pathetic. I got this tattoo at 24. I think that yes, she influenced me. This inscription marked the path of my development and life scenario - through obstacles to success, added speed and concentration of events while I was coping with the load. Although, maybe this tattoo is not forever. Perhaps someday I will bring it together or change it to another.

Comment: this inscription is very strong in its semantic load - through knowledge lies the road to wisdom, the path to the top is thorny. The thumb of a person is responsible for logic and determination, characterizes his personality, reveals the strength of character. Having stuffed such an inscription on the thumb of her left hand, the girl largely predetermined her path in science - through difficulties to success. Fate began to “gift” her with obstacles precisely from the age of 24, which is confirmed by the line of Fate on the right hand, which is crossed by short transverse lines, they do not change the course and direction of the line of Fate, but form barriers to the smooth flow of energy. Does a girl need this difficult experience on her way to success in life? The choice is definitely hers.

On the side of the outer side of the index finger of the right hand, a 35-year-old girl has an inscription in Latin "Even the sky is not the limit."

From her story: “I have been working as a flight attendant for a long time, for me this is not just a profession, but a state of mind. When I enter the cockpit and see the huge blue sky ahead and the bright sun shining in my eyes, I experience happiness here and now. I got this tattoo at the age of 30, and for me it means not so much the state of flight as it acts as a symbol of infinity, maybe that's why I'm not afraid to fly. I'm not sure that I can clearly define the impact of the tattoo on my life, but I know for sure that if I stop flying, I will reduce it. I will be very sad to look at the sky - like a bird that will never experience the feeling of flight and the feeling that happiness is ahead.

Comment: in fact, the phrase "Vel caelus mihi limes non est" hides more deep meaning- from above we are given the opportunity to change our lives, but often we do not notice it. Someone is afraid of the unknown and feels fear at the thought of leaving the comfort zone, someone dares to dream, but does not take active steps. The girl on the right hand on the line of Life after 37 years has several clear branches pointing upwards, they follow each other with an interval of 2 years and tend to the hills of Jupiter, Saturn and the Sun. These branches indicate the opportunity to make your life full of bright events, to achieve social and material success after 37 years. Having a tattoo on index finger(finger of Jupiter) shows the desire of the girl to satisfy her own ambitions and realize herself as a person. I hope that the recommendations received will help her in the future to make her life bright and meaningful, filled with knowledge, success and happiness.

On the wrist on the outside of the right hand of a 32-year-old man there is a tattoo "Mountains".

From his story: “I have been seriously engaged in yoga and spiritual self-improvement for 5 years, but only a year ago I decided to get myself such a tattoo. I know that mountains, as a symbol, have different interpretations. For myself, I determined the content of this symbol as an example of peace of mind and strength of mind. In addition, the mountain shows me the peak to which I must climb throughout my life, honing my skills in spiritual and physical practices. I can definitely say that this tattoo has changed me. She pushed me to serious reflections, active actions, gave me confidence and determination, now I, as a climber, go only forward! Not one step back! At the same time, outwardly, I remain calm and detached, I don’t create fuss around me. ”

Comment: the image of the "mountain" has many interpretations. For this man, the tattoo is a symbol of true knowledge and higher wisdom. It describes his individual path to soul/spirituality and light. I saw the hands of this man before and after tattooing. A comparison of the lines and signs on the hands in dynamics showed that the short lines of anxiety and anxiety “left” the hands, and the line of the Sun on the right hand continued and received a clearer display, which allows us to conclude that the tattoo has a positive effect on the life of a man.

Tattoo "19"

A 50-year-old man has the number 19 engraved on his left hand at the base of his thumb.

From his story:
« I got to serve in Afghanistan already before the withdrawal of troops. Our column was ambushed, a grenade exploded on the armor, I was thrown from the armored personnel carrier and, as it turned out later, I was wounded. For about five minutes I was unconscious, then an animal fear overtook me - I could be captured if help did not arrive in time. Lucky. They repulsed with the help of "turntables" that arrived in time. Awareness of mortal danger came later. After demobilization, he stuffed the number 19 on the hand, which was hit by a fragment, the number 19 - that's how old I was at the time of the wound.

Comment: the base of the thumb is the seat of the human life force. This is where all his energy is stored. It is no coincidence that a man, while still a very young man, intuitively chose this particular part of his hand for tattooing. The life of this man is divided into two parts: before and after the injury, and the tattoo reminds him that his life could have been tragically cut short. The picture of past events is clearly reflected on his left hand. There is a small gap on the Life line at the age of 19, a cross on the Head line, and the Fate line, just starting its movement from the bracelets, is abruptly stopped by a transverse line exactly at the age of 19. Further on the hand you can see a new line of Fate, which originates already from the lower part of the hill of the Moon and rushes to the hill of Saturn. A man, having survived, consciously builds his life path and tries to live brightly, interestingly and with pleasure, this is indicated by lines and signs on his hands.

A person's hands convey the individual characteristics of a person, and whatever the reasons for tattooing on the hands, they always carry a certain semantic load and contain a message for those to whom they are shown. The experience of a palmist and communication with people who have various tattoos on their hands, an analysis of the reasons for applying and the results of the influence of tattoo designs on the life of their owners allow me to draw conclusions that for someone, perhaps, will serve as a reason for reflection, and someone will be interested just out of curiosity:

  1. The procedure for applying a tattoo today is no longer as painful and complicated as it used to be. It requires an attentive attitude, a well-thought-out and honest dialogue with yourself about what you want to change in yourself and in what form (symbol / inscription) to declare this to the world. At the same time, you should clearly and clearly understand that you can only change yourself and your idea of the reality around you, and not other people.
  2. Currently, such a trend in tattooing as Mehndi is becoming more and more popular - this is ancient art creating drawings on the body using vegetable paint (henna), extracted from the leaves of the Lawsonia Inermis plant. These are temporary tattoos that last long enough for a person to make the final decision to get a permanent tattoo on their hands or not.
  3. The choice of tattoo design should be conscious. A tattoo is for a lifetime, so it's important to be careful about choosing a look that will be part of you forever and picking one that you can live with for the rest of your life. You should not follow fashion trends and trends, the advice of tattoo artists, you need to seriously understand and comprehensively study the history of the symbol that you have chosen for yourself. You need to make sure that the tattoo will bring positive changes in your life.
  4. It is extremely important to understand the meaning of the inscription tattoo in its original sense. Tattoos cannot be an illustration of disparate events and express fragments of some thoughts and emotions, they carry huge potentialities and contain a layer of information that affects your energy, so they cannot be taken lightly.
  5. The location of the tattoo is critical. You should think carefully about where to apply the tattoo. In palmistry, each part of the hand is responsible for its own sphere of influence. You should not put a tattoo on that part of the palm where the lines and signs on the hands are located, so you can block the energy flowing along the lines and contained in the signs. The hands of a person are in plain sight, and not always your open dialogue with the world can be adequately understood by other people. A number of professions generally prohibit tattooing on the hands. Think about whether it is worth placing a tattoo on such an open part of the body as the hands?
  6. Making a tattoo is easier than removing it - it is a very painful and expensive procedure. Know and be aware of the potential negative impact tattoo drawing, even subsequently removed, on a person's life in the context of the development of his individual life scenario.

A person's needs for spiritual growth, attempts to go beyond restrictive social attitudes and openly declare oneself, including using paraphernalia, are often the main reasons for getting tattoos. « Humanity is looking for a symbol to express itself" ( Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947), British mathematician and philosopher).

The Russian language is rich in various phraseological units. There are a huge number of expressions that are used, intuitively understanding what they mean, but very rarely think about the actual origin or correct pronunciation, not to mention the adequate literary application.

Obviously, this is an upward movement towards the goal of one's existence, its achievement with the involvement of all the forces released to man by nature, despite obstacles, large or small. After all, this is the meaning of life for a true Stoic. We should also mention the appearance in the Russian version of the turnover of the interesting word "thorns". It means a thorn, a plant with thorns, and also in a figurative sense, difficulty, adversity, etc.

What, in general, are the stars for a person at the present stage of technological development.

After all, this is just a stable expression, and changes in the language are often so fleeting that this stability of phraseological units in fact turns out to be rather unsteady.

Plot

XXIII century. Patrol long-range reconnaissance ship "Pushkin" discovers in space a dead ship of unknown origin, on it are the corpses of humanoid creatures artificially bred by cloning. One of the clones, a girl of about 18 years old by earthly standards, turns out to be alive thanks to the spacesuit in which she was apparently at the time of the ship's death. At the quarantine near-Earth station, the Commission on Contacts decides the fate of the alien. Exobiologist Nadezhda Ivanova insists on the isolation and comprehensive study of the clone at the Institute of Space Genetics, since the purpose of breeding alien humanoids in vitro is unknown. However, the commission takes the side of Sergey Lebedev, a specialist in contacts with an alien mind, who offers to settle an alien in his house under his own responsibility, since he is sure that communication with the human family is more productive to establish contact. Nadezhda Ivanova is tasked with biocontrol over the creature.

The girl lives in Lebedev's house, settles in his family, consisting of elderly parents of Sergei (father is an oceanologist, mother is a professor of medicine, obstetrician) and his son Stepan, a cadet of the Space Institute. Soon, thanks to the efforts of Sergei, a long-awaited contact is established - Niya (as the girl calls herself) begins to communicate with others. As a result of this communication, some superhuman abilities of the alien are revealed, such as instantaneous reaction, telekinesis, teleportation. Extraordinary abilities, inhuman strength and endurance manifest themselves independently in emergency situations. At the same time, clear signs of amnesia are visible - Niya can tell almost nothing about herself. Only sometimes separate episodes of the past emerge in the girl's brain: father-professor, sisters and brothers-clones in the laboratory, acid rains, poisoned soil and water. Over and over again, memories from the past are superimposed on Niya's prosperous earthly present, influencing her actions. Meanwhile, Nadezhda discovers an artificially implanted "obedience center" in Niya's brain, by influencing which with a certain radiation, you can completely control her.

Niya like it earthly life and earthlings, but the thought does not leave her that she was created for some important mission and must fulfill it. Soon, chance helps to resolve her torment. On television, they show a report about the visit of envoys from the planet Dessa. They flew in to ask earthlings for help: all natural resources have been wasted on Dessa and the biosphere has been destroyed, the population has no water and air, people are in danger of imminent death. Seeing one of the messengers, Rakan, Niya recognizes him and remembers that her home planet is Dessa. The girl makes a decision: to return to her native planet.

Niya infiltrates the ship Astra, sent on a cesspool mission to Dessa. The crew includes her acquaintances: Nadezhda Ivanova, who is one of the specialists sent to Dessa, and the trainee Stepan Lebedev, who was late for his long-range reconnaissance ship and transferred to the Astra. On the same ship, Rakan and his colleague Torquay return home. On the way to Dessa, the Astra encounters the dead Gaia, the ship in which Niya was found a year ago. Rakan and Torquay recognize it as the ship of a prominent scientist from Dessa, Professor Glan. Risking her life, Niya teleports to Gaia and disables the "Call of Glan" - the installation for controlling and tracking clones. Stepan saves her from inevitable death.

The envoys finally reveal to the earthlings the secret of the dead laboratory ship, Professor Glan, and Niya's past. Glan really wanted to save Dessa from an ecological catastrophe, but no longer believing that the inhabitants of the planet could do it, he created artificial people, endowing them with superpowers so that they could stop Dessa's death by force. Misunderstood by his compatriots, Glan was forced to flee Dessa on the last laboratory spacecraft, hoping to return when his friends come to power and give a signal to return. However, the signal never arrived. When the ship's food and fuel supplies ran out, Glan decided to return, but the return did not happen - judging by the preliminary analyzes of the earthlings, the Gaia was blown up.

Once on Dessa, earthlings begin an operation to clean up the planet. But they are opposed by the local oligarch Turanchoks, who is afraid of losing profits from the sale of gas masks, masks, air, water, food, and with them real power and might. The people of Turanchoks, led by Torquay, plant an aggressive chemical reagent in the last active water source and accuse the earthlings of spoiling the water, inciting discontent among the population. However, the earthlings save the source, and then successfully carry out the first stage of sewage, condensing the deadly atmosphere of Dessa with plasma discharges, while at the same time showing the blue sky and real pure rain to the Dessians for a short time. Turanchoks decides to take extreme measures. Using the only remaining clone control center, he decides to blow up the Astra using Niya. Rakan realizes that Turanchox, who has placed his headquarters in the former Glan Institute, has made it to the clone control center. Hesitating earlier, actually betraying Glan for fear of harming his career, now Rakan is ready to give his life to save Dessa. In addition, Rakan is concerned about the fate of Niya, he was the donor of biomaterial for clones of Glan, Niya is biologically his daughter.

When meeting with Turanchoks, Rakan asks him not to interfere with the earthlings, but does not find sympathy. Turanchox shows Rakan the control center and summons Niya to carry a powerful bracelet bomb onto the Astra. Rakan tries to prevent this, but one of Turanchox's servants mortally wounds him. The dying Rakan decides to destroy Turanchoks and, with his last strength, releases Glan's last brainchild from the institute's secret laboratory - biomass (material for future generations of the population of Dessa). Biomass is extremely aggressive and spreads instantly, devouring organic matter.

At this time, Niya goes to the Astra, obeying the commands of Turanchoks. Hope stops her, but Torquay, following on Niya's heels, shoots Hope. Seeing her death, Niya overcomes the "call of Glan" and throws out a bomb. Biomass quickly fills the Glan Institute, in the depths of which Rakan and Turanchoks die, and breaks out. This is disastrous for the entire planet, but Niya, using her superpowers, tames the biomass. Together with the Astra astronauts, Niya gives biomass a development program - water and grains. Thanks to this program, the biomass is transformed into different plants and trees. Planet Dessa is beginning to take on nature again and a return to environmentally friendly life.

In the final, the Astra crew, having completed its task of preliminary cleaning of Dessa, is preparing to return home. Saying goodbye to Niya on the field with planting young greenery, Stepan asks her to return to Earth with him, but Niya refuses - she takes a mental "cast" from Stepan's face, leaving his image in her memory. She now knows exactly her mission - the establishment of a normal life on her home planet.

New movie version

Frame from the film "Through hardships to the stars" (new version, 2001). Cosmodrome.

In 2001, the director's son Nikolai Viktorov released a revised version of the film. The image was digitally processed, color restored, some special effects were reworked, a completely new sound track was recorded in Dolby Digital format. The duration of the film has been brought into line with the standards of modern film distribution, as a result it has been reduced by 20 minutes. According to the authors, in the revised version, the extended episodes were reduced, which reduced the dynamics of the film, and episodes that carried Soviet ideological overtones were thrown out. In the new version of the film, in particular, shots of starships hovering in the clouds above the spaceport (the landing site exactly copies the famous "glass" of Sheremetyevo-1 Airport), shots of the ship from Dessa "Gaia" hanging in outer space, have been added.

Kir Bulychev wrote: “When the film was being shot, Richard had the idea to write “All the shots of the dead planet Dessa were filmed on Earth today” instead of the word “end”. It’s a pity that Goskino got scared, and the picture ends as usual.” Only in the new version of the film in the end credits can we see the phrase: "All the frames of the dying planet Dessa were filmed on planet Earth."

Almost the entire film was cut, especially the first series "suffered". The following scenes have been drastically cut:

"Niya is an Artificial Human" (1 episode)

  • Meeting of the commission on contacts at the quarantine near-Earth station, which determined the fate of Niya (00:06:30).
  • Petr Petrovich's mentions of the earthly adept of cloning Zagorsky (00:07:58; 00:20:57)
  • Niya sneezes at the Lebedevs' house during the television broadcast of the Commission on Contacts (00:08:04)
  • The episode with branzulite, which Sergey brought to Stepan from the planet Senik (00:13:53).
  • Maria Pavlovna's conversation with the robot Glasha about Niya (00:21:01).
  • The scene of making contact with Niya in Sergey's office (00:21:20)
  • Niya’s quick somersaults on the grass and Glasha’s dissatisfaction with the mess in the house: “If I had seen, I would not have allowed this disgrace!” (00:22:54; 00:24:12)
  • Episode on the beach about the moral standards of earthlings and the sight of naked Niya (00:36:45)
  • Part of the conversation between Sergey and Nadezhda about the "obedience center" (00:37:34)
  • Dialogue between Stepan and exobiologist Klimov about the significance of the work of the Astra crew (00:59:25)
"Angels of Space" (episode 2)
  • Barmaley and Stepan's visit to Niya's laboratory after she regains consciousness (00:02:10)
  • Report by Ivanova and Klimov on the study of Dessa to Dreyer with a video sequence of general plans of the empty corridors of the Astra (00:22:54)
  • The final part of the meeting of earthlings before the first phase of cleaning (tunnel absorption) (00:30:05)

It is no secret that the composer Alexei Rybnikov partially used the same musical themes for the opera Juno and Avos and the film Through Hardships to the Stars. In the new version, most of the themes were replaced by the music of Dmitry Rybnikov, the son of Alexei Lvovich. However, the main theme of the new version is the so-called "Thunderstorm" theme, written by Alexei Rybnikov exclusively for "Thorns". In addition, both versions of the film begin with the well-known theme "Light of the Stars", in the new version the arrangement is only slightly changed.

Data

"Through hardships to the stars" - Glan Institute against the backdrop of landscapes in the vicinity of Isfara
  • For the role of Niya, not an actress was invited, but a fashion model Elena Metelkina.
  • Initially, it was planned to shoot the alien completely bald, but because of the criticism of the officials from the State Film Agency, they had to make short white wigs for all the clones.
  • Mannequins, who "played" the role of clones who died on Gaia, were made from a plaster cast of Metelkina, filling it with liquid foam.
  • Exploration of the destroyed alien ship filmed in the scenery installed at the bottom of the pool of the Yalta Hotel.
  • Some of the space scenes were filmed underwater, using "hydroweightlessness" to mimic the real thing.
  • The film was supposed to show a flyer - a device that lowers Niya and Sergey Lebedev from orbit directly to his house on the landing site. But there was not enough budget for this vehicle, I had to show how Sergey and Niya get off to the site, but it is not clear from where. Also, in the scene when Stepan Lebedev asks Nadezhda for permission to "ride", he goes behind the bushes, where an ordinary car is visible.
  • Barmaley's robot was supposed to be made of metal. But the props master welded the first construction from iron buckets, ignoring the director's sketches, and Viktorov rejected it. There was no time or money left for another, and the robot was made inflatable.
  • In the episode where Niya undresses on the beach, it was originally intended to show that the heroine is missing a navel. The party authorities considered such a scene unacceptable in Soviet cinema. For the sake of saving the scene, I had to invent a dialogue about " moral standards earthlings."
  • The Southern Cross Plateau was filmed near Bakhchisarai in the cave city of Chufut-Kale.
  • The role of one of the archaeologists on the Southern Cross plateau was played by the director's son Nikolai Viktorov, who later became the director of the New version of Thorn.
  • On the information board of the spaceport, you can see the name of the starship Zarya and its destination - Alpha Cassiopeia. This starship is apparently named after the starship "Zarya" from another film by Richard Viktorov: "Moscow - Cassiopeia".
  • Views of the dying planet Dessa were filmed in Tajikistan, in the vicinity of an abandoned oil refinery near the city of Isfara. Before that, it was planned to shoot the film of Andrei Tarkovsky's "Stalker" there, but no place was found to accommodate the film crew, and the shooting was moved to Estonia. The unusual view of the landscapes was obtained through the use of technical spectrozonal film "SN-6M", one of the emulsion layers of which is light-sensitive to infrared radiation.
  • The underground structures of Dessa were filmed in the cellars of Solyanka.
  • The all-terrain vehicle, on which earthlings explore Dessa, was made at the Yalta film studio from an army tracked armored personnel carrier and aircraft parts. The biomass, consisting of fire-fighting foam and flour, was also filmed there, and the scuba divers swimming in this mixture created a visual effect of the live seething of the mass.
  • At the end of the film of the new version, the actor Vladimir Nosik, who played Leah, is erroneously indicated. In fact, this role was played by his brother, Valery Nosik.
  • Actor Uldis Lieldidzh was known in Soviet cinema for the roles of officers of Nazi Germany. However, the director Richard Viktorov gave the role of the Soviet cosmonaut Sergei Lebedev to this typical Latvian.
  • The mention by Stepan's grandmother Maria Pavlovna of Pluto, where "some Wanderers were found" is a clear reference to the "midday" cycle of the Strugatsky novels. Wanderers are also present in some of the works of Kir Bulychev himself (for example, in the novel "Gai-do").
  • October 8, 2015 at the London Science Museum as part of the Russian exhibition Cosmonauts. Birth of the Space Age" premiered a fully restored original version of the film "Through hardships to the stars."
  • On January 28, 2016, the premiere screening in Russia and a meeting with the creators of the restored film took place in the famous Moscow cinema "Illusion".

How to understand per aspera ad astra?

Oksana Fedyuk

Meaning - through difficulties to a high goal.

The phrase came to us from ancient rome- Per aspera ad Astra (Latin). Its author is Lucius Annei Seneca (4 BC - 65, ancient Roman philosopher, poet and statesman).

The word "thorns" means - 1. Any prickly plant. Such plants. 2. A separate thorn, thorn, needle of such a plant ( Dictionary D. N. Ushakova, 1935-1940).

The word "thorns" was formed from the plant Thorn, blackthorn, or prickly plum (lat. Prunus spinosa) - a type of small prickly shrubs of the subfamily Plum (Prunoideae) of the Rosaceae family.

In turn, "Thorny" was formed from "thorns".

Accordingly, the expression "through thorns to the stars" is figurative of overcoming the path strewn with thorns to a high goal (stars).

The meaning of this tattoo

Dolphin

scorpion looking for the path to the stars (((((((
The navigation star or the wind rose is an ancient, and yet not outdated tattoo, a motif known a century ago. The stars in the sky often served as a guide for sailors, especially the Northern, or Polaris, in the Northern Hemisphere, and the Southern Cross in the Southern. Sailors tattooed their navigational stars because they relied on them: their lives depended on the stars, they were supposed to show the way home. The sailors were very superstitious people and hoped that their star-shaped tattoos would serve as an amulet for a prosperous journey. Around the same time, the starfish began to appear on compasses. At a later time, such stars began to symbolize the path of life, its search. They began to be made by those who wanted not to stray from the chosen path. Thus, the star became a guiding one - its image helped not to stray from the chosen path when a person is lost or scared. Later, such stars became symbols of awards, high encouragement, and a sign of distinction.

Scorpion tattoos - looks stylish, courageous, beautiful to a greater extent suitable for men who prefer an aggressive tattoo.

Scorpion Tattoo Meaning:

Scorpio is sometimes a protective talisman.

In Europe, the scorpion is a symbol of violence, hatred and revenge.

In Japan, the scorpion is the personification of wisdom, and in combination with flowers, it is a symbol of love and a long married life.

AT Ancient Egypt he was an attribute of the patroness of the dead goddess Selket.

In Africa, it was believed that the scorpion itself releases a remedy against its poison, so its symbolism was of a dual nature - it was a symbol of both healing and killing.

In the Bible, a scorpion is a demonic creature, in medieval art it is a sign of deadly betrayal, sometimes envy or hatred.
Here are the meanings of the scorpion symbol in different traditions:

Christianity: evil, torment, betrayal, Judas Iscariot.
Egypt: an attribute of Set in typhonic form, Selk, or Selket, protecting the dead. Seven scorpions accompanied Isis during the search for Osiris.

Jewish tradition: poison, death.

Mithraism: dadophores (torchbearers), holding up and down torches, are the Bull and Scorpio as symbols of life and death, the rising and setting Sun, etc.

Sumero-Semitic tradition: scorpions or scorpion-man were the guardians of the Gates of the Sun, the Mountains of the West and the Double Gates. Scorpions were associated with Ishtar or Nina. Attribute of Sabazius Phrygia.

In Greek mythology, the hunter Orion, who boldly challenged the goddess Artemis to a duel, was mortally stung by a scorpion.

No value. Just a lot of tattoos. And what difference does it make who injects himself now. There is currently no demand for tattoos. So you can fill yourself at least a tank, at least stokers. But with the stokers they will have you.

Maksim

in the past, the scorpion was worn by combatants (army sphere) or lawless prisoners (literal meaning: "I will survive in any conditions"), who were serving sentences for the so-called. "red zones" - a reinforced regime with tough discipline, not thieves, but escorts. It was much more difficult for "thieves" to exist there.
Sometimes the scorpion is taken into their special symbols by individual detachments of special forces or just armies, and then they begin to roam from the stripes on the bodies of the people themselves, who serve or served in them.
Translation - through thorns to the stars. Wind rose - similar to a horseshoe - good luck, fort. If this tattoo is on your back, then we can say that it means from ensign to general)))) since there is only one star, then to major general.

Tattoos with inscriptions are perhaps one of the best ways to express yourself. Special place this category is occupied by phrases in Latin with translation, which is not at all surprising. This ancient language is the progenitor of many European languages (Italian, French, Spanish, Romanian), it was spoken by the best philosophers, generals, rulers and scientists of the past centuries. Latin is the language of Horace, Cicero, Aristotle, Hippocrates, Julius Caesar.

Latin inscriptions as tattoos are becoming more and more popular among young people around the world. As a rule, these are people who are more interested in philosophy and sciences, who want to emphasize their individuality and intellectuality.

Such a tattoo provides a wonderful opportunity to express oneself, declare one's way and meaning of life, talk about one's feelings and beliefs, express and affirm one's life position, emphasize the hidden line of the soul and the strength of the human spirit.

Not all people are fluent in Latin, so we publish a list of interesting phrases with translation into Russian. Below, we have broken up some examples of inscriptions into several sections, depending on what message they carry. If you did not find the phrase you need, look at other inscriptions for tattoos or ask a question in the comments.

Despite the fact that at present the language has gone out of active use, it has left an indelible mark on the culture in the form of great scientific papers filled with deep philosophical thoughts and aphorisms, which even now have not lost their significance and relevance. The great sayings of antiquity are now used as an original and beautiful way to express your inner world, ideals and principles through tattooing.

It is interesting! Despite the fact that Latin is considered a dead language, there is one state where Latin has the status of an official language. In the Vatican, all the rites of worship and the maintenance of church documentation still take place in Latin.

Types of inscriptions for tattoos in Latin

Latin phrases

➤Latin phrases usually consist of several words and have a specific theme: for example, family, law, friendship. Latin phrases can be both general statements and have a special case. Among the well-known phrases in Latin are the following: "castigat ridendo mores"; (Joking to punish the funny), "aut viam inveniam aut faciam" (Either find a way, or pave it yourself) and "non omnis moriar"; (no, all of me will not die). See the most popular statements below.

Philosophical sayings in Latin

Philosophical thoughts in Latin, unlike phrases, are usually better known. Many have been spoken by famous scientists or expressed by famous thinkers. It is quite possible to say that the most famous philosophical saying was Descartes's saying: "cogito ergo sum" (I think, therefore I am), which addresses the question of the existence of mankind and the question of being. Other well-known philosophical sayings in Latin include "errare humanum est" (to err is human), "facta non verba" (not in word but in deed) and "nosce te ipsum" (know thyself).

Modern Latin phrases

Today, modern famous quotes and phrases are translated into Latin. For example, the immortal saying of Martin Luther King, "I have a dream," was translated into Latin as: "Habeo Somnium." And here is the famous exclamation from the movie “A Christmas carol” “Idiotic traditions!” (Usually referring to Christmas. Explained in BBC video tutorials.) “Bah! Humbug" was translated as: "Phy! Fabulae" and Beam Me Scotty (from the television series Star Trek) as: "me transmitte sursum caledoni"

Tattoo translation into Latin

The Internet is a huge space where you can get a translation of almost any statement or inscription from Russian into another language of your choice. Latin is no exception. Using free/paid translation services, you can get a phrase in Latin for your tattoo. For example, you liked the phrase: “God is love”, type the phrase in a search engine and look for matches in Latin, it’s better, of course, to know some other language: the chances of finding what you need increase. For example, in English this phrase would look like this: "God is love", which in Latin: "Deus est diligo".

Tattoo translation in professional fields

➤People of a certain profession - the military or doctors - also gravitate towards tattoos in the form of an inscription in Latin. As military phrases, many use sayings like: "pro patria" (for the Motherland), "semper paratus" (always ready), and "haec protegimus" (under our protection) are all popular slogans. People associated with medicine commonly use phrases like: "dei gratia" (by the grace of God), "bonadiagnosis, bona curatio" (Good diagnosis - good treatment), or "non sibi sed omnibus" ("not to oneself, but to others").

In fact, there are a lot of popular and I would say already hackneyed phrases in Latin, but I advise you not to repeat other people's thoughts and someone else's styles, but to express only your own, and let them be understood only by you, or narrow circles of your acquaintances, but they will carry a special meaning. Tattoos in Latin can express all thoughts and feelings, in any way you like. Often, without resorting to meaning, people simply use the beauty of Latin letters, depicting names, dates or titles on themselves. Although the catalogs have a lot of suggestions for ready-made thoughts, words and phrases and their images, a skilled tattoo artist will be able to fill you with any expression in any handwriting and font. Such tattoos can, in principle, be located on any part of the body, in any form, and different colors. It all depends on the desires and style of self-expression of the client.

The meaning of tattoos made in Latin and their meaning

Writing in Latin on the body can be an excellent idea for people with deep philosophical views thinking about the meaning of life. The advantage of a phrase in Latin with a translation is that only the one who possesses it understands the meaning and meaning of the inscription, because not everyone wants to put their sacred thoughts and life credo on public display. This is a kind of talisman, designed to always remind a person of who he is and what he is striving for.

Important! When searching for a phrase in Latin for a tattoo, it is better to use several translation sources in order to avoid possible errors and inaccuracies.

Common topics of sayings in Latin

Despite the fact that no one speaks Latin for a long time, a large number of deep philosophical sayings and quotations on a variety of topics have survived to this day. Girls most often prefer to apply phrases dedicated to love, relationships and family values. Men like sayings about life and death. Spiritualized and creative personalities usually choose quotes about freedom and defiance of fate.

Did you know? The first tattoos with inscriptions in Latin appeared in the Middle Ages. Members religious communities inflicted quotes from the Bible and oaths in the name of Christ as a symbol of unshakable faith in the Almighty and as a sign of loyalty to the brotherhood.

Style of tattoos - inscriptions

Depending on the meaning contained in the inscription in Latin, on the size of the saying itself, on the location of the tattoo on the body, there are many options for designing the image. It can be ornate artsy inscriptions with monograms or a strict and solemn Gothic style, some prefer to make inscriptions as if printed on their skin, others like sayings harmoniously inscribed in the composition of any image. A deep philosophical thought, dressed in an attractive decorative form, will please the owner of the tattoo not only with a semantic load, but also with an original interpretation.

Important! Before the master starts work, ask him to show you a portfolio! Not all masters who professionally apply images can cope with applying text. The most common defects in the work with inscriptions are spelling errors, unplanned tilting of letters to the right and left, uneven distribution of pigment, as a result of which some letters may become partially or completely invisible.

Where on the body is it better to get a tattoo with inscriptions

Depending on the size, shape and meaning of the phrase in Latin, the appropriate location on the body is selected. Long lines look good on the arm and along the collarbone. Small capacious statements written in small print look very neat and original on the female foot. Large text written in large print can be applied to the area of the shoulder blade, or between the shoulder blades. This arrangement will look interesting on both the male and female backs. Volumetric tattoos, supplemented with images, can be placed in the back or under the ribs.

A tattoo with a phrase in Latin looks perfect on any part of a girl's body or young man. Most often, girls make tattoos with inscriptions on the neck, wrist, back, ankle. In men, a popular part of the body for applying such a tattoo is the chest, back, arms. Choose the place where you want to tattoo, consciously, considering all the nuances. Of course, the tattoo on the palm looks interesting, but it can attract the attention of the authorities, cause their negative emotions. It's probably best for them not to know you have a tattoo.

Recently, the half-length arrangement of inscriptions on the body has come into fashion. One part is applied to one hand, the second part to the other, each part of the phrase in itself contains a wise thought, however, when the hands are combined, the tattoo becomes one, revealing the full meaning of the saying.

It is necessary to approach the issue of the location of the tattoo on the body with full responsibility, as it is selected and applied for life. If the application of any philosophical saying has for a person not just a decorative purpose, but a tattoo is also his motivator, then it is better to do it not in the most visible place, so that, as it should be for a talisman, the inscription inspires, gives new strength, without wasting energy, enclosed in it, on strangers.

Important! When applying a tattoo in the chest, abdomen and hips, it must be taken into account that in this place the skin is especially prone to stretching, which is fraught with a change in the image and the quality of the applied pattern! The skin on the wrists is very delicate and vulnerable, the inscriptions made in this place will not be worn for a long time and may require correction.

Stages of tattooing

Properly performed steps of tattooing ensure the safety of the client and allow you to get a high-quality beautiful image.

From the idea to the realization of the idea of a tattoo, there are several steps.

  1. It all starts with choosing a phrase that you would like to see on the body. You can, having come to the salon, look at and select a sketch in the catalog, or you can independently find your favorite saying in any source and, together with the master, come up with a stylistic design for it.
  2. Having decided on the desired image and its location on the body, the skin in the selected area, if necessary, is removed from the hairs, degreased and lubricated with an antiseptic gel.
  3. The sketch is transferred to the skin.
  4. With the help of a tattoo machine, a dye is injected under the skin, and a tattoo is applied.
  5. At the end of the tattooing process, the skin is again treated with an antiseptic and a healing ointment is applied. The area of skin with a tattoo is covered with antiseptic material and cling film, this helps to avoid infection and drying out of the wound. The bandage can be removed after 3-4 hours.
  6. The tattoo made heals for about a week, during this period it is necessary to lubricate this area of the skin with healing ointments, and also avoid prolonged contact with the sun and water.
