"Way of the Virgin"

With the blessing of Bishop Mstislav of Tikhvin and Lodeinopol, on July 7-9, 2016, the First Great Tikhvin Cross Procession "The Way of the Virgin" will take place on the territory of the Tikhvin diocese along the route of the appearance of the miraculous icon of the Tikhvin Mother of God. From the ancient “Tales of the Appearance of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God” it is known that the appearance of the miraculous image within the boundaries of the Land of Veliky Novgorod took place “invisibly carried by angels” “walking luminously through the air”, passing from one place to another.
According to the Tale, the icon appeared to eyewitnesses seven times:
1) first on Lake Ladoga (between Novaya Ladoga and Storozhno),
2) then on Smolkova Mountain on the Oyati River,
3) later in the place of Imochenitsa on the same river,
4) then on Kukova Hill on the Pasha River,
5) also in the place of Kozhela on the same river,
6) then - over the mountain on the right bank of the Tikhvinka River (over the site of the future Tikhvin Vvedensky Monastery),
7) and finally, on the other side of the Tikhvinka River, where she remained to stay in the Tikhvin Assumption Monastery founded later on this place.
The sevenfold apparition of the Tikhvin Icon and its heavenly procession is exceptional among other miraculous apparitions of icons. Mother of God in Russia. Not a single icon appeared in a similar way. The spiritual meaning of such a large-scale miraculous phenomenon lies in the fact that the Mother of God enlightened and affirmed Orthodoxy, revealing here through Her image Her special Presence, Blessing and Protection of the entire Russian North.
The appearance of the Tikhvin Icon, miraculously transferred from Constantinople to Russia, also had the historical meaning of the sovereign building of Holy Rus' as the center of universal Orthodoxy.
In all seven places of the appearance of the image of the Mother of God, crosses were already placed in antiquity, chapels and temples were erected, and later monasteries were founded. Surprisingly, all these places and toponyms have been preserved on the map of the Russian Land to this day. Seven places of the appearance of Our Lady of Tikhvin form a route 220 km long. from Ladoga to Tikhvin.
The idea of holding a procession along the heavenly path of the procession of the Tikhvin Mother of God has long been expressed by admirers of the Tikhvin Mother of God. Trial runs along this route were periodically made by small groups of pilgrims. The last stage of this journey (20 km from Kukova Gora to Tikhvin) has been performed by pilgrims for several years now on the eve of the feast of Our Lady of Tikhvin.

The Great Tikhvin Cross Procession is held by the Tikhvin Diocesan Administration in cooperation with the St. Petersburg Metropolis, the Administrations of the Municipal Districts on whose territory the procession takes place, the Perm Community in St. Petersburg Regional Public Organization and other public organizations who wish to take part in this procession.

During the procession, at the places of the appearance of the Tikhvin Icon, an akathist will be read and a troparion to the Tikhvin Icon will be sung. At the sites of the apparitions of the Tikhvin Icon, pilgrims will be given specially printed icons of these apparitions, taken from the ancient “Tale of the Apparition of the Tikhvin Mother of God.” Thus, each pilgrim will collect seven unique images of the apparition of the Tikhvin Icon.

Indeed, anniversaries can remain in monuments, commemorative signs, worship crosses. Guided precisely by this idea, Bishop Mstislav of Tikhvin gave his blessing to install a memorial cross in honor of the 100th anniversary of the repose of Abbess Taisia in the monastic cradle of Abbess Taisia at the Vvedensky Tikhvin Monastery. The cross, made by the diligence of the abbess of the monastery, Abbess Tabitha (Fyodorova) from oak, is striking in its size, reaching a height of seven meters. First Taisi Readings in Tikhvin

On May 23, 2015, the first small Tikhvin Taisi readings dedicated to the Centenary of the memory of the Great Abbess were held in the Holy Vvedensky Convent. This is one of the four monasteries in which Mother Taisia labored during her life. It was in him that the monastic path of the blessed ascetic of piety of the Russian Church of the 19th - early 20th centuries began. Here she took monastic vows, having lived in the monastery for ten years - from 1862 to 1872.

Beginning in 2000, the parishioners of the Leushinsky metochion on the day of the Angel of Mother Taisia came to the Tikhvin monastery for pilgrimage, when it was still closed, prayed, and bathed in the waters of the Holy Stream. After the opening of the monastery on this day, they began to serve the Liturgy and perform a memorial service in memory of the Leushinsky abbess. However, Mother Taisia's Angel Day has never been held at such a high level.

The Tikhvin Diocese was the organizer of the Tikhvin Taisi Readings. The date and place of this event were not chosen by chance: May 23 is the day of the namesake of Abbess Taisia (Solopova) and the day of her monastic vows in the Vvedensky maiden monastery in Tikhvin. In 2015, the centennial anniversary of the repose of the Leushinsky Abbess is celebrated.

The Readings were attended by representatives of St. Petersburg, Tikhvin, Lodeynoye Pole, Cherepovets, Borovichi, Murmansk, pos. Myaksy, there were guests from Finland.

Readings opened Divine Liturgy in the monastery cathedral church. After the liturgy, a litany for the dead was served for Abbess Taisia, and the waters of the Vvedensky brook, encircling the holy monastery, were blessed. The guests heard classical works performed by the winner of international competitions, participant in the programs of the Vladimir Spivakov International Charitable Foundation, the children's violin ensemble "Tutti" from St. Petersburg (leader - Honored Worker of Culture Olga Shchukina). Children Sunday school"Candle" at the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral in Tikhvin recited the poems of Mother Taisiya (leader Natalya Dmitrieva). The first speaker was Galina Aleksandrovna Alexandrova, the head of the pilgrimage department of the Borovichi diocese. She spoke about the motherland of Abbess Taisia, about her childhood, about the creation of the Museum of Abbess Taisia. Bishop Ephraim of Borovichi and Pestovsky donated to the Vvedensky Monastery an icon of St. Jacob of Borovichi, the patron saint of the city of Borovichi, to whom Mother Taisia prayed in her youth.

Maxim Antipov, church historian, an employee of the Presidential Library presented to the attention of the participants of the Readings the book of the undeservedly forgotten Christian writer-historian A.P. Bashutsky "Tikhvin monasteries". it historical research beginning of the XIX century has not lost its relevance to this day. The inquisitive reader will note the high artistic merit of this book. Bashutsky was brought up together with the future Emperor Nicholas I, which determined his great future. However, being in his youth a "social rake", the soul of the company, he completely changed after the death of Count M.A. Miloradovich, wounded during the armed rebellion on Senate Square (Decembrist uprising), gradually becoming deeply a religious person. Bashutsky turned out to be a talented and fruitful writer. Long before Nekrasov, in his stories, he described folk life - characteristic portraits of representatives of various professions of the Russian Empire. Unexpected for the participants in the Readings was the fact that Bashutsky's wife, Maria Andreevna, entered the Holy Vvedensky Tikhvin Monastery as a novice.

Hieromonk Cyprian (Galkin), monk of Holy Trinity Alexander Svirsky monastery, made a report on the topic "The God of Abraham, Alexander and Taisia", in which he held comparative analysis three famous apparitions of the Holy Trinity.

Ida Alexandrovna Klimina, a writer and local historian from the city of Cherepovets, told the participants of the Taisiinsky readings about the creation of the Novo-Leushinsky convent in the village of Myaksa, the nearest populated place from the flooded Leushinsky monastery.

All speakers held the attention of the audience and were rewarded with grateful applause. The participants of the Readings were able to communicate with each other in an informal setting, ask questions to the speakers, exchange experiences, and make contacts.
After a common meal, the guests of the monastery were given a tour of the monastery.

It was unanimously expressed that the Taisi readings in Tikhvin should be held regularly and become a new spiritual tradition of the Tikhvin monastery.

The first Tikhvin Taisi readings were over, the guests departed, but the bonds of love for the blessed old woman Taisiya Leushinskaya united all the participants into one spiritual Taisi family.

On the state-forming significance of the miraculous image ...

On July 9, celebrations were held in Tikhvin on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the return of the miraculous image of the Mother of God “Tikhvinskaya” to Russia. He shared his thoughts on the significance of this event with RNL readers in an interview with a correspondent Anna Barkhatova rector of the Leushinsky metochion (St. Petersburg) Archpriest Gennady Belovolov.

Time is running fast - we are already celebrating the 10th anniversary of the return of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God to Russia. I remember how long and prayerful was the expectation of her coming. I remember how Father Sergius Garklavs first came to Tikhvin in the 1990s, when the monastery was still inactive, there was a stadium and some offices, and it was the intention to hand over the icon that prompted the revival of monastic life in the monastery. Each visit of Father Sergius was awaited with trepidation for his last word "Yes and Amen."

For some, a "historical event" is a flight into space, scientific discovery, a military victory ... And for us - the parishioners of the most distant parish of St. Petersburg, and now the Tikhvin diocese - the real historical event was the visit of the ruling bishop of the Tikhvin diocese, Bishop Mstislav. Firstly, because the last time we had a bishop was only in the last century - in 1995. Secondly, because we were the first to be visited by the ruling bishop of the newly created Tikhvin and Lodeynopol diocese.
The history of our new diocese has only 4 months. At the very first diocesan meeting, Vladyka Mstislav announced that he wanted to go around and see all the parishes during that summer. In principle, we were expecting a bishop, but when the secretary of the diocese, Father Alexander Larin, called and said that the bishop would come to us the day after tomorrow, this news took us by surprise.
On the other hand, it turned out for the better. If we had known a month in advance, we would have been preparing for a whole month. And so it happened: "In what I find, in that I judge." At least there was no time to paint the lawns with green paint.
AT this case helped out a lot heavenly patrons- Apostles Peter and Paul. We are getting ready for the Feast of the Patronage and, naturally, the fence has been painted, the lawns have been mowed down, and the firewood has been removed. In general, without much preparation, everything was ready. I studied the rites for the meeting of the bishop in advance, rehearsed it in advance, but it was obvious that this would not surprise Vladyka. I wanted some of our Sominsk zest. I contacted the head of the Sominsk folk choir, which has existed for more than half a century and performed both on the Kremlin stage and abroad. In our village they say that the Buranovsky grandmothers rest in front of their Sominsk colleagues.

On July 8, 2016, on the eve of the celebration of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, the head of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Varsonofy of St. Petersburg and Ladoga, committed all-night vigil Assumption Cathedral in the Tikhvin Assumption Monastery of the Theotokos.

Metropolitan Varsonofy conveyed to the congregation the congratulations of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill on the occasion of the holiday and addressed those present with an archpastoral word. “Today, with great joy, we have come to this monastery of the Mother of God, as we usually come to our mothers to celebrate important dates in the lives of our parents,” Vladyka Barsanuphius noted. “We are celebrating the appearance of the icon, which happened in the distant XIV century, and remember the miracles from it, noted in all subsequent centuries.”

Recalling how many times in the history of the Fatherland the Mother of God interceded for the Russian people, especially during the years of difficult trials, the hierarch said: “Today we glorify Her image, through which for many centuries the Mother of God showed Her love, Her care for us. Thank God that this image has returned to Russia! We can kneel and open our hearts before the Queen of Heaven, offer prayers to Her, read akathists, sing troparia. What She has done for us is for our salvation. Therefore, I wish everyone the help of God through the prayers of the Virgin.

Metropolitan Varsonofy thanked Bishop Mstislav for his hospitality.

In response, the abbot of the monastery said: “Today the city of Tikhvin rejoices - today a host of bishops, many priests, hundreds of pilgrims worship the icon of the Mother of God, called “Tikhvinskaya”. The icon has been away from here for sixty years. She has been in Chicago for many years, and today our guests from Chicago are present here – Vladyka Pavel, Vladyka Peter, and Father Alexander, the son of Archpriest Sergius Garklavs, long-term custodian of the Tikhvin Icon. The icon has returned to where it was found many centuries ago. We pray before her and ask the Mother of God for help for the monastery, for the entire Russian Church, for all our people.”

The abbot of the monastery said that guests from America brought a piece of land from the place where the temple stands as a gift to the monastery Life-Giving Trinity, built by the first holy martyr of the St. Petersburg land, Archpriest John Kochurov, with the blessing of St. Tikhon, the future Patriarch.

Bishop Mstislav presented Metropolitan Varsonofy with a commemorative medal dedicated to the celebration of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God.

Brief information

The Tikhvin Monastery was founded in 1560 for the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, miraculously found in 1383: the icon appeared to fishermen over Lake Ladoga, next to Staraya Ladoga. In the mid-1920s, the monastery was closed and devastated. During the war, the Nazis took the icon away. She got to the Baltic States, then to Germany, and from there to the USA. In 1995, the monastery was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church, and the restoration of the Assumption Cathedral began. The main shrine of the monastery was returned to Russia in 2004.

Most of the life of His Grace Mstislav, Bishop of Tikhvin and Lodeinoye Pole, is connected with St. Petersburg, where he received a seminary and academic education, was included in the clergy, took his first steps on the pastoral path and was promoted to vicar bishop.

Bishop of Tikhvin and Lodeynopol Mstislav (in the world Dyachina Mikhail Valerianovich), was born on November 11, 1976 in Ukraine. After graduating from school, he served in the ranks of the Soviet army in 1985-1987.

He began his service in the Church as a subdeacon of the Archbishop of Pskov and Porkhov Vladimir (Kotlyarov). In 1988 he entered the Leningrad Theological Seminary, from which he graduated in 1992. In 1996 he graduated from the St. Petersburg Theological Academy and was appointed head of the office of the St. Petersburg diocesan administration.

On March 26, 1998, he was tonsured a monk with a name in honor of the right-believing Prince Mstislav the Brave of Novgorod. On April 12, 1998 he was ordained a hierodeacon by Metropolitan Vladimir of St. Petersburg and Ladoga, on December 4 of the same year - a hieromonk.

From July 18, 1999 to 2001, he managed the Konevsky Nativity of the Theotokos Monastery. He was a full-time priest of the Nikolo-Bogoyavlensky Cathedral in St. Petersburg. By Easter 2007, he was elevated to the rank of hegumen. In 2007 he was appointed secretary of the St. Petersburg diocese.

On October 28, 2011, he was appointed dean of the Lodeynopol district of the St. Petersburg diocese and acting rector of the Holy Trinity Alexander-Svirsky Monastery, while retaining the position of secretary of the diocese.

On March 16, 2012, he was appointed rector of the Alexander-Svirsky Monastery, and elected Bishop of Lodeynopolsky, vicar of the St. Petersburg diocese.

I cordially greet you in the ancient city of Tikhvin in the holy Assumption Monastery, chosen Holy Mother of God to store one of the greatest shrines Christendom- The Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, miraculously came here in 1383.

On the site of the appearance of the Miraculous Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, a wooden church Assumption of the Virgin, which became the place of storage of the Shrine. This temple was repeatedly destroyed by fire, while the Icon miraculously remained unharmed. In the years 1507-1515 in Tikhvin, by decree and at the expense of the Grand Duke of Moscow Vasily Ioannovich, as a majestic ark for the Tikhvin icon, the stone Assumption Cathedral was built, consecrated in 1515, on the feast of the Assumption, by St. Serapion, Archbishop of Novgorod.

In the 16th century, Tikhvin became the place of the sovereign's pilgrimage. In 1560, Archbishop Pimen of Novgorod, by decree of Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich the Terrible, founded here one of the most significant monastic cloisters in Rus', which became not only a prominent place of pilgrimage, but also the center of the spiritual life of the Russian North-West, which had important political and economic significance. For more than six centuries, prayer has not stopped at the miraculous image of the Lady, the flow of pilgrims to the Tikhvin shrine has not dried up.

During the years of revolutionary hard times and subsequent tragic events in Russian history, including the years of the Great Patriotic War, the Tikhvin Assumption Monastery was destroyed.
