Basic information

Date of establishment of the educational organization

The Kostroma Theological Seminary was founded at the Ipatiev Monastery in 1747 by the Bishop of Kostroma, the outstanding theologian Sylvester (Kulyabka). During the existence of the seminary, many prominent figures of the Russian Orthodox Church came out of its walls: metropolitans, archbishops, rectors of Theological Academies and seminaries, theologians, church historians, educators, a huge number of ordinary ministers of the Church - urban and rural priests. (Diagram depicting a branchy tree growing out of the seminary building, on the branches of which the names of its most famous graduates are indicated). Along with the main subjects: liturgy, homiletics, theology, Holy Scripture, church singing, icon painting, church history, the seminarians studied Latin, Greek, Hebrew, German and French, civil history, philosophy, literature, mathematics, psychology, logic. The fundamental library was considered one of the richest in the Kostroma region. Since 1887, an exemplary church- parochial school, the choir of the theological seminary was considered one of the best in the diocese. The seminary was the center diocesan life: diocesan congresses of the clergy, meetings of the Church Historical Society were held here. The seminary was visited by prominent figures of the Church who came to Kostroma. (October 5, 1902, the seminary hosted Archpriest John of Kronstadt). In July 1918 the seminary was closed. Many teachers and graduates accepted in Soviet times martyrdom in camps and prisons.
The revival of the seminary began as a result of the warming of church-state relations after perestroika, thanks to the merits of the Archbishop of Kostroma and Galich Alexander (Mogilev), who was appointed on September 1, 1989 to the Kostroma cathedra. Oct 1 1990 at the cathedral church of the Resurrection of Christ on N. Debre, a diocesan school was opened - a prototype of the future seminary. The rector of the school was Archpriest Alexander Androsov, a graduate of the Leningrad Theological Academy in 1984, under whose leadership the first years of the school's formation passed. (since 1996, Fr. Alexander Androsov has been working in the representation of the Russian Orthodox Church in the USA). In 1991 the religious school is located in the building of the Epiphany-Anastasin convent(former refectory building). On July 17, 1996, by the decision of His Holiness the Patriarch and the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, the school was transformed into a seminary. Its first rector was Archimandrite Gennady (Gogolev), a graduate of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy in 1994. The basis of the educational process in the seminary is the programs adopted in the St. Petersburg Theological Seminary and the Academy: dogmatic, basic, moral and comparative theology, liturgy, history of the Russian Church, general church history, history Local Churches, history of Russia, homiletics, practical guide for pastors, philosophy, church singing, catechism, bible story, church local history, Church Slavonic, ancient Greek, Latin, English, Russian languages, logic. But there are also special disciplines: the course of Russian literature is read by Professor Yu.V. introduced a pedagogy course. The church of St. Alexis, man of God. Teachers - 40 people, of which 4 are candidates of theology.

(Historical and archaeological excursion)

The fate of the Kostroma Theological Seminary from its founding to this day is not without interest in relation to those frequent movements that, due to various circumstances, it was subjected to at different times during the period of more than a century and a half of its existence.

With the opening of the Kostroma diocese, according to the report of the Holy Synod approved by Empress Elizaveta Petrovna on July 16, 1744, there was an urgent need to establish a theological school for the education of future pastors of the churches of the newly established diocese. At the end of 1747, already the second Bishop of Kostroma Sylvester Kulyabka (1745-1750) (a) opened a theological school for children of the clergy, which was placed in the Ipatiev Monastery, in monastic cells near the bishop's chambers. Bishop Gennady (1753-1757) gave this modest episcopal school the original character of a theological seminary by introducing grammar, poetry and rhetoric classes (b).

Due to the lack of good premises in the Ipatiev Monastery and partly due to the inconvenience caused by a malfunction, sometimes the impossibility of crossing the Kostroma River for city schoolchildren to visit the seminary, the theological seminary under Bishop Gennady (1753-1757) was moved to the city itself to the then empty Simeonovsky Monastery (founded between 1630-1666), which was located on Mshanskaya Street near the current Church of the Fathers of God and was abolished in 1764.

Under the subsequent Bishop of Damascus of Askaron (1758–1769), the “diocesan” seminary was moved out of the city from the Simeonovsky Monastery, being placed in the northeastern deserted corner of the city of Kostroma on the banks of the Zaprudnya River, near the Spaso-Zaprudnensky Monastery (abolished in 1764), where by 1760, their own spacious rooms were built for classes (a wooden two-story house), for a hostel for pupils with a common dining room, a house for the apartment of the prefect and teachers.

With the extreme dilapidation of the wooden seminary buildings in Zaprudnya, by the beginning of the nineteenth century, the seminary was forced by order of Bishop Pavel Zernov (1778-1800) to temporarily settle again in the Ipatiev Monastery, while the lower classes and teachers' apartments were placed in a special building, previously designated as a spiritual consistory, and the theological classes and the rector's apartment - in the old house of Tsar Mikhail Feodorovich, wholly restored by the end of September 1863 (c) of the year.

With the construction in 1802 in Zaprudnya of a large one-story wooden house on a stone foundation, which consisted of eight spacious rooms, the theological seminary was returned under Bishop Evgeny Romanov (1800-1811) to Zaprudnya, where soon by 1806 wooden houses were built for the prefect, teachers, for the hostel of pupils and even a stone kitchen with a student dining room.

Having now taken on a well-maintained appearance in its new buildings in Zaprudnya, the theological seminary burned down in 1813, after which, by order of Bishop Sergius (1812–1817), it found shelter in the ancient (founded about the middle of the 15th century) Epiphany, then male, monastery. Here the seminary, according to the new charter of 1814, consisted of only three upper classes, while the lower three classes formed a theological school, which was located separately from the seminary in the fence of the Assumption Cathedral, in a stone building.

In a big fire on September 6, 1847, a merciless flame exterminated in Epiphany Monastery both the rector's and fraternal cells with services, and those four buildings of the monastery, in which the theological seminary has instilled with conveniences until now. By order of Bishop Justin (1845-1850), on this occasion, the seminary was transferred to the buildings of the Assumption Cathedral, in which, together with the theological school, it was temporarily located in that two-story vast building, which, due to major repairs since 1904, was reserved for cathedral clergymen.

In view of the cramped premises of the seminary in the cathedral building and following the decision in the Holy Synod (March 13, 1861) of the case that began in 1850 on the construction of buildings for the theological seminary in the Epiphany Monastery, already abolished from December 5, 1847, not in favor of the aforementioned project, arose in In 1864, a project for the construction of a theological seminary in the Pesoshinsky Monastery (on the other side of the Volga River, 17 versts from the city of Kostroma), which was under the control of the rectors of the seminary, but the project turned out to be extremely impractical. In its hopeless and helpless situation with regard to the premises, the theological seminary found help and support for itself in the person of Archbishop Platon of Kostroma, who so managed to dispose all the diocesan clergy in favor of building their own buildings for the seminary that they responded with love to the ardent appeal of their master and, having brought abundant material resources for the benefit and enlightenment of his youth, he was not slow to acquire from the merchants the Strigalevs, by a bill of sale dated June 24, 1866, a well-known large plot of land with a stone three-story house in the courtyard with three stone buildings belonging to it and other stone and wooden buildings - for twenty thousand rubles, and also for empty, behind the road against the house and buildings, coastal land - for two thousand rubles. The theological seminary moved to its own premises here from the cathedral house in 1878 for the overhaul of the aforementioned stone buildings and the establishment of economic services again.
